3GSM - NOKIA GOES WIRELESS

3GSM - NOKIA GOES WIRELESSPosted on 03-24-2006 11:13While the Finnish giant had a grand stand at 3GSM, it was conspicuous by the absence of any truly new desirable product. Nokia continued to push its Eseries, Nseries and L’Amour fashion phones and only had a trio of mid-range phones to show us. We’re expecting another big launch very soon.Wanadoo Wi-Fi?It was the 6136 handset offering internet calling over Wi-Fi that garnered the most attention. Expected to ship around June with Orange’s new repackaged Wanadoo internet and mobile service, the 6136 will work much like BT Fusion but instead of Bluetooth uses UMA (Unlicensed Mobile Access) to switch seamlessly between mobile and W-LAN networks. The ‘fold’ phone itself hardly has a revelatory feature set, with a 1.3-megapixel camera, quad-band and Push-To-Talk capabilities, as well as a MicroSD card slot and built-in FM visual radio plus music player. The 6131 is another mid-range quad-band fold phone with an automatic flip mechanism and a whopping 16.7-million-colour, QVGA 2.2-inch screen. Its other features mirror the 6136 (minus UMA) but it also includes Bluetooth. The 6131 will be available from April. Lastly, the 6070 is an entry-level candybar with a VGA camera and FM radio.

Bluetooth News - March 2006

After an explosive year of growth in 2005 that has seen the Bluetooth market more than double, 2006 looks set to provide another healthy year of profits for Bluetooth vendors. In its new study, ABI Research concludes that the market for Bluetooth radios will grow by 71% to a level just over 500 million radio shipments in 2006. Stuart Carlaw, Principal Analyst, Wireless Connectivity, notes, "This growth will be attributed to extremely robust attach rate gains in the cellular handset market as well as a continuation of the explosive growth in the headset market."

The report forecasts that the market will grow at a compound annual rate of over 40% between 2004 and 2011, and equipment shipments are expected to break the 1 billion mark by 2009. Several new applications for Bluetooth are likely to come to the fore in the medium term: most notable among these is the gaming market, which is likely to be spurred by the releases of the Nintendo Revolution and Sony's Playstation 3.
Carlaw adds, "The importance of the stereo headset cannot be discounted. This product provides one half of a match made in heaven with music-enabled cellular handsets. We expect this type of product to drag Bluetooth into a myriad of other use cases, such as rear seat entertainment in the vehicle and the long-awaited Bluetooth MP3 player."
This report comes at a critical time for Bluetooth as silicon providers and OEMs begin to consider the inclusion of a UWB physical layer as the high data rate link for Bluetooth. Questions still remain as to whether the battle of the UWB standards will have a serious impact on uptake from a manufacturer's perspective. Going forward, however, Ultra Wide Bluetooth may well be the most prolific application for UWB.

Lost notes

The numbers
The numbers 4, 8, 15, 16, 23 and 42 appear throughout the series, both in sequence and individually. They were broadcast from the Island's radio transmitter, and it was this message that drew Rousseau's expedition there. Although she later changed the message after the deaths of her team, the numbers had also been heard by other people, eventually making their way to Hurley, who used them to win the lottery. However, after his win, a series of misfortunes began to happen to those around him, leading him to believe the numbers are cursed. His search for answers led him to Australia and, through the crash, to the island itself, where he ultimately discovers the numbers engraved on the hatch. Inside the bunker, the same numbers appear on the occupant's medicine bottles, and make up a code that must be entered into the computer. The sum of these six numbers, 108, has also become significant in connection to The Dharma Initiative. This number appears on a mural inside the Initiative's Station Three, and the full sequence of numbers must be entered into the computer every 108 minutes. The individual numbers also appear frequently throughout the lives of the survivors, both before and after the crash.
